When we hear birds chirping loudly in the morning, it's a natural phenomenon called the dawn chorus. You might notice it early in the morning before the sun comes up while the rest of the world is quiet. The dawn chorus starts in the early spring when longer daylight hours cause a hormonal change in songbirds. It causes them to sing more to mark their territory or attract a mate.
Did you know songbirds take turns? They will sing in a certain order each morning so that every bird has a chance to be heard.
The first Sunday of May is known as Dawn Chorus Day. It's a day when bird lovers around the world wake up early to listen to the show. In 2024, Dawn Chorus Day is on Sunday, May 5th, and in 2025 it's on Sunday, May 4th.
